Mental Health Exhibition
For this project, we researched and completely immersed ourselves with the knowledge of Mental Illness. Everyone in class was given a Mental Disorder to research and write a report on, along with that we read a book from the perspective of two people who have Mental Illness, and our final task was to write a fictional story about someone who has the Mental Disorder we were given. The outcome of the project would be presenting our Mental Illnesses, that we researched, at exhibition and from there present our Case Report about our Mental Illness, Fictional Stories, and do a therapeutic art activity. The Mental Illness that I chose was Factitious Disorder. I mainly chose it because it was something I had never heard of and I wanted to learn about something new. Someone with this disorder deceives others by pretending to be sick, appearing so, or purposely injuring themselves.
I learned throughout this project a lot about Factitious Disorder and how even though it is not a common disorder it affects a lot of people. It's created a self-awareness in me to be more understanding of why people act a certain way and I know now that it is not always in their control. Some skills that I have improved on, because of this project, are my researching skills. Sitting down, writing my case report, and finding reliable proper sources was a challenge, but now I am a better researcher. I know that I became better at writing creatively because of the task of writing a creative fictional story. Writing is something I have always enjoyed and it was cool to see a story unfold in front of me. These types of skills I can take with me into my Junior year.
After doing this exhibition, I am able to go into 11th grade with more skills under my belt and I know a lot about Factitious Disorder now. It was interesting researching something that I had never heard of and I'm excited for future projects where I will be able to do that again. Exhibition was a lot of fun, I think I was successful in telling more people about Factitious Disorder and teaching something that a lot of people hadn't actually heard of. Overall, after this experience I am excited for future projects like this where I will be to research something that is not common and teach others about it.
Down below you will be able to see the Vision board I created for the Art Therapy portion of the project.
