Monologue: Present VS Future
Living Your Life in the Moment
By Elly Jarvis
Okay, here we go. I’m not gonna make a socially awkward mess of myself alone in public, again. Besides anything awkward you do won’t matter because it’s not like these people who see you now are gonna know you in the future. I’m just gonna order and then take a seat.
~~~
Okay here we go again. You are a normal human being, who has the bare minimum of social skills. You are a normal human being, who has the bare minimum of social skills. You are a normal hu--
And of course! All the tables are taken, this is what you get for grabbing coffee at the nearest Starbucks around 4 in the afternoon! Oh well, there’s this seat by this guy, he looks friendly enough. I better take it before anyone else does.
Anyway, what was I here for again? Oh yeah! Planning for Andrea’s wedding in Europe! It’s hard to believe that she finally pinned one down, and a Brit for that matter! The Lady Macduff has finally bought one from the market. It’ll be fun though, gonna cost enough to fly over there, and the bridesmaid dress… and the hotel…. and the…. UGhhhhh!!!!! So much planning! It’s not even for my own wedding! I better get a husband soon, how’s it going to look to my parents if I don’t get married in the next year?! This is too stressful.
~~~
“Order for Dawn”
“Dawn?”
“Is there a Dawn here”
“Better get your head out of your planner and into the present,” said the guy across from me. “Excuse me?” “Your order” he says gruffly, gesturing to the coffee counter. “Oh!” I run and grab my order of coffee and then come back and grab my seat. He laughs and shakes his head. “Got a problem?” I ask with laughing eyes. “It’s people like you that mystify me,” he says. “Why? I’m just living my life,” I retort. “Is that what you call it?” “Uh-huh,” I say dismissing him.
{Monologue Begins}
“Girl, what are you doing? Here you are planning out your whole future, stressing about things that haven’t happened, worrying about the unknown. You’ve got it planned! You’ve got it made! Nothing to worry about, right? Your life is set! Right?...”
When does it begin? Contentment? Will the happiness start when you know that all your plans are finally fulfilled, or will you still be distracted by the days following tomorrow? It’s not about the finish line, it’s about the steps you take to get there, and who knows? Maybe your steps will take you somewhere better than the finish line that you planned. It all starts with appreciating the things around you. Have you ever asked yourself what about now? How do you want to spend your life right now? After all, if you can’t enjoy things here, right now, in the moment, how will you know you can enjoy your plans in the future? Around you magic is happening! Think about it, creativity, innovation, and originality all could be happening right now. Not to mention this place makes great coffee. So many possibilities in your life can happen right now! Your whole life could be passing by you and you wouldn’t even know it because you’ve got your head stuck in that planner.”
